What is brand identity? (It's more than a logo)

Your brand identity is how people recognise your business at a glance: your logo, colours, fonts and the way you speak. Here's what it includes, and why it matters for a local business.

When people hear “brand”, they often think of big companies with big budgets. But every business already has a brand, whether it was planned or not. It's the impression people carry about you. A brand identity is simply the set of visual and written choices that shape that impression, on purpose.

What brand identity includes

Your logo

The most visible part, but only one part. A good logo is simple, recognisable from across the street and still clear when it's tiny, such as a WhatsApp profile picture.

Your colours

Two or three colours used consistently. Think of how you recognise a famous brand from its colour alone. A local shop can build the same recognition in its own neighbourhood.

Your fonts

The lettering on your signboard, menu, website and cards. One font for headings and one for text is usually enough.

Your voice

How you speak to customers: formal or friendly, short or detailed, Hindi, English or a mix. It shows up on your website, in your WhatsApp replies and on your packaging.

Your guidelines

A simple document that writes all of this down, so your printer, your nephew who helps with Instagram and your website designer all use the same logo, colours and fonts.

Why it matters for a local business

It makes you recognisable

When your signboard, carry bag, Google profile picture, website and Instagram all look the same, people start to recognise you instantly, even before they read your name.

It makes you look as good as you are

Many established businesses have excellent products but a look that hasn't kept up: a pixelated logo, five different colours, a signboard that doesn't match the menu. A considered brand shows the same care you put into your work.

It builds trust

Consistency signals reliability. If your website, listing and packaging all look different, a new customer may wonder if they're even the same business.

Signs your brand needs attention

  • You don't have a logo, or it only exists as a blurry photo
  • Your signboard, cards and online profiles all look different
  • Your logo is unreadable at small sizes
  • Your business has grown, but its look hasn't changed in fifteen years
  • Different people make your posters and use whatever colours they like

Refresh or start again?

If your current logo means something to your customers, you don't have to throw it away. Often the best approach is a careful refresh: keep what people recognise, sharpen the shapes, choose a proper colour palette and make it work at every size. If there's nothing worth keeping, a new identity can be designed from scratch.

Where your brand shows up

Once you have a brand identity, it should be applied everywhere:

  1. Signboard and shopfront
  2. Website
  3. Google Business Profile photos and cover
  4. Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp Business profile pictures
  5. Business cards, bills, menus, packaging and carry bags
  6. QR code cards on your counter

Getting it done

Our brand identity service starts with a conversation about your business and customers, shows you a few directions, then completes the set: logo versions, colours, fonts and simple guidelines, ready for print and online. You can see an example on Our work, where Laxman Bikaner's refreshed brand runs from their website to their counter.

In short

  • Brand identity is your logo, colours, fonts and voice, used the same way everywhere.
  • It makes a local business recognisable, trustworthy and as established-looking as it really is.
  • A careful refresh often works better than starting over, especially if customers already know your logo.
  • Paint swatch cards in a few calm colours fanned out on a wooden table
