NAP consistency: why your name, address and phone must match everywhere

NAP stands for name, address and phone. When they're written the same way everywhere your business appears online, customers and Google trust you more. Here's how to get it right.

You'll hear people who work on local search talk about NAP. It simply stands for your business's Name, Address and Phone number. “NAP consistency” means writing those three exactly the same way everywhere your business appears.

It sounds obvious. In practice, most businesses that have been around a while have a messy trail of slightly different details across the internet.

Why it matters

For customers

If your Google listing shows one phone number, your Instagram another and Justdial a third, customers call the wrong one, or wonder whether these are even the same shop.

For Google

Google cross-checks your details across your Google Business Profile, your website, social profiles and directories. When they all agree, Google is more confident your business is real and where it says it is. When they disagree, that confidence drops. It's one of the foundations of local SEO.

What “the same” really means

Small differences add up. Pick one official version and use it everywhere:

  • Name: “Laxman Bikaner” everywhere, not “Laxman Bikaner Sweets” in one place and “Laxman Bikaner Wale” in another
  • Address: the same shop number, lane, sector, city and PIN code, written in the same order
  • Phone: the same main number, in the same format, such as +91 98765 43210

Where your NAP appears

Make a list and check each one:

  1. Google Business Profile
  2. Your website, usually in the footer and on the contact page
  3. Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp Business
  4. Zomato, Swiggy or other platforms you're on
  5. Directories such as Justdial, IndiaMART or Sulekha
  6. Apple Maps and Bing Places, which some customers use
  7. Printed material: visiting cards, bills, boxes and banners

Common problems we find

  • An old phone number still live on a directory from years ago
  • An old address after the shop moved down the road
  • Duplicate listings on Google with different details
  • The name with extra keywords on Google but not elsewhere
  • A branch's details mixed up with the main shop's

How to fix it

  1. Decide your official name, address and phone.
  2. Update your Google Business Profile first.
  3. Update your website and social profiles to match exactly.
  4. Search your shop's name and old phone numbers to find other listings, and update or remove them.
  5. If you have several branches, give each its own consistent NAP.
