Choosing the right business category on Google

Your category tells Google which searches to show you for. Pick the wrong one and the right customers may never see you. Here's how to choose well.

Of all the fields in your Google Business Profile, the business category is one of the most important and one of the easiest to get wrong. It tells Google what kind of business you are, and Google uses it to decide which searches to show you for.

Primary and additional categories

You choose one primary category and can add several additional categories.

  • The primary category should describe your main business in the simplest, most accurate way. It carries the most weight.
  • Additional categories cover the other things you genuinely do.

Some Indian examples

  • A sweet shop that also serves meals: primary “Indian sweets shop”, additional “Restaurant” or “North Indian restaurant”
  • A dental practice: primary “Dentist”, additional “Cosmetic dentist” if you offer it
  • A boutique that stitches clothes: primary “Clothing store” or “Boutique”, additional “Tailor”
  • A diabetes clinic: primary “Diabetologist” or the closest medical category Google offers

How to choose the primary category

  1. Think like a customer. What would they type? “Dentist near me”, not “oral healthcare provider”.
  2. Look at what's available. Start typing in the category box; Google only accepts categories from its own list.
  3. Check successful businesses like yours. Search for a similar business nearby and see what category Google shows under their name.
  4. Pick the most specific accurate option. “Indian sweets shop” is better than “Store” if that's what you are.

Mistakes we often see

  • Too general: “Store” or “Shop” for a specialist business
  • Too many unrelated categories added to catch more searches
  • The wrong main business: a restaurant listed mainly as a caterer, so it misses dine-in searches
  • Never revisited: the business has changed, but the category hasn't

Categories and the rest of your profile

The category works together with your description, services and photos. If your category says “Sweet shop”, your photos should show sweets and your description should mention them. Consistency across your profile, website and social pages helps Google trust that you are what you say you are. It's a core part of local SEO.

When to change your category

Change it if your business genuinely changes, such as adding dine-in seating or moving from retail to manufacturing. Avoid changing it frequently or while your listing is being verified, as changes can trigger another review.

Getting help

Choosing categories is part of every profile we set up through our Google Business Profile service. If you'd like to know whether your current category is helping or hurting, a free Google check looks at it alongside everything else.

In short

  • Your primary category tells Google which searches to show you for, so it matters a lot.
  • Choose the most specific accurate category, in the words customers use.
  • Add additional categories only for things you genuinely offer.
