Why your opening hours on Google matter more than you think

Wrong hours on Google send customers to a closed shutter, and many never come back. Here's how to set regular, special and festival hours properly.

Imagine a family driving across town on a Sunday evening for your famous rasmalai, because Google said you were open until 10 pm. They arrive at 8:30 to a closed shutter. They won't blame Google. They'll blame you, and they probably won't try again.

Opening hours look like a small detail. For customers, they're one of the most important facts on your Google Business Profile.

How Google uses your hours

  • It shows “Open now” or “Closed” right under your name
  • It can show your shop for “open now” searches, such as a late-night “medical store open now”
  • Google Maps warns people on the way if you're about to close

If your hours are wrong, all three work against you.

The three kinds of hours

1. Regular hours

Your normal weekly timings. Set each day separately, including the day you're closed. If you close for lunch, add two time slots for that day, such as 9 am to 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm to 9 pm.

2. Special hours

Use these for any day that's different from normal: Diwali, Holi, Eid, Christmas, Independence Day, a family wedding or a local bandh. Special hours override your regular hours for that date only, so you don't have to change and then remember to change back.

3. More hours

Some categories allow extra sets of hours, such as delivery, takeaway, dine-in or senior-citizen hours. If you deliver until 11 pm but close the counter at 9 pm, say so.

A festival checklist

Before each major festival:

  1. Add special hours for every day that changes
  2. Update the same timings on your website and Instagram
  3. Post a short update on your Google profile about festive boxes or offers
  4. Check your WhatsApp Business auto-reply mentions the festival timings
  5. After the festival, check your regular hours are showing again

Keep every place in agreement

Your hours should be identical on Google, your website, your social profiles, Zomato or Swiggy and your shop door. When they disagree, customers don't know which to believe, and Google's trust in your details drops. This consistency is part of good local SEO.

Common mistakes

  • Hours set once, years ago, and never updated
  • No closing day marked, so you appear open seven days a week
  • Festival closures announced only on Instagram, not on Google
  • Delivery hours and shop hours mixed up

  • Wrong hours send customers to a closed shop, and many won't give you a second chance.
  • Use regular hours for the normal week and special hours for festivals and one-off closures.
  • Keep the same timings on Google, your website, social media, delivery apps and your door.
