On-page SEO: page titles, descriptions and headings
On-page SEO is making each page of your website clear about what it offers. Here's what that means in practice, with simple before-and-after examples.

On-page SEO is everything on a page that helps Google, and people, understand what the page is about. It's the part of SEO you control most directly, and often where small changes make the biggest difference.
The main parts of on-page SEO
1. The page title
The title is the blue link people see in Google results and the text on the browser tab. It's one of the clearest signals of what a page is about.
- Before: “Home”
- After: “Fresh Indian Sweets in Ballabgarh, Faridabad | Sharma Sweets”
Keep it under about 60 characters, put the most important words first and include your business name. Our guide on page titles and meta descriptions goes deeper.
2. The meta description
The short text under the title in Google results. It doesn't directly change rankings, but it decides whether people click.
- Before: (empty, so Google picks random text from the page)
- After: “Handmade kaju katli, ladoos and festive gift boxes, fresh every morning since 1998. Order on WhatsApp or visit us near the main market.”
3. One clear main heading
Every page should have a single main heading (the H1) that says what the page is. Then use smaller headings to break up sections, like the ones in this post.
4. Helpful, clear text
Answer the questions customers actually have, in the words they use. Put the most important information first. Short paragraphs and lists are easier to read on a phone.
5. Images with descriptions
Every image should have alt text: a short description of what's in it, like “box of assorted Diwali sweets”. It helps visually impaired visitors and helps Google understand the image.
6. Clean addresses (URLs)
A page address like yoursite.com/diwali-gift-boxes/ is clearer than yoursite.com/page?id=4821.
7. Links between your pages
Link related pages together: your sweets page to your gift boxes page, your blog post to the service it describes. It helps visitors and helps Google understand your site.
A quick on-page checklist
For each important page, ask:
- Does the title say what the page is, in customers' words?
- Is there a meta description that makes people want to click?
- Is there one clear main heading?
- Does the text answer real customer questions?
- Do the images have alt text?
- Is the address short and readable?
- Does it link to related pages?
On-page and technical SEO
On-page SEO is about what's on the page. Technical SEO is about how the page is delivered: speed, mobile layout and whether Google can read it. You need both.
